Resolutions, Goals or Intentions - It's Never Too Late!
In this episode, Anne Corbin discusses the importance of resolutions, how to deal with failures, and the role of fun in personal growth. She also talks about combating negative self-talk and the significance of documenting progress. A segment on political correctness is also included.
Key Points
- Resolutions are successful more often when you truly believe in the importance of them and have made them reasonable and achievable.
- S.M.A.R.T is a common acronym used for successful goal setting. Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Realistic. Time Bound. Resolutions are less specific so you really need separate goals and resolutions.
- Goals, resolutions and intentions are dependent on the wording. Dry January is a challenge to not drink for one month. ‘I resolve to give up alcohol on Tuesdays and Wednesdays’ is a resolution that is achievable indefinitely.
- Write down your resolutions. You are 42% more likely to succeed if you commit to your resolution in writing to refer back to.
- Rather than comparing yourself to others refer back to your own progress when defining your success. The journey is about _self-improvement_.
Happy New Year! How are we doing with the new year’s resolutions? Anne offers a little advice to make it easier to stick with your resolutions much further into the year and defines the important differences between resolutions, goals and intentions.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Use of ‘Happy Holidays’ might have been the first glimmer of political correctness 40 plus years ago and it’s now manifesting in hate crimes and cancel culture.’
‘I acknowledge that within the personal development world, there is a tendency to combine resolutions with goals and personally I believe that both are valuable and that they are separate animals.’
‘It’s considered that there are about eight separate areas of your life to consider. These are Mental, Physical, Spiritual, Emotional, Vocational, Financial, Relationships and Contribution. You could extend it to include Fun and Family. Most people leave out Fun. Not a good plan.’

ABOUT THE HOST**
Anne originally trained as a maths and science teacher but then chose to qualify as an accountant and worked in business for 12 years. Having recognised that there was more to life than a successful career – specifically working long hours to make money for other people at the expense of her own health – she quit the rat race and returned to her first love: teaching, but on a part-time basis. Fascinated by psychology, philosophy and theology, she is now a successful trainer, speaker and author, who enjoys sharing her passion, purpose and knowledge with a growing audience.
