How Was The Future Looking Back in 1970's ?

E26 • Jun 9, 2022 • 20 mins

In this episode, Anne Corbin delves into the effects of rapid change and overchoice in our society. She explores the implications of information overload, shifts in human relationships, and the breakdown of traditional institutions. The discussion also touches on bioengineering, artificial intelligence, and emerging forms of protest.

Key Points

  • ‘Future Shock’ details the sickness that will befall mankind as a result of too much change in too short a time.
  • In the 1970s changes had already reached a rapid pace. With increased travel and the need to move to work, people felt disquieted by transience. This has, of course, been made worse with time, disrupting the sense of community.
  • Even in 1972, the depth of technological development was substantial to the point where even the concept of Artificial Intelligence was seen as an inevitability.
  • The breakdown of institutions was foreseen, as has come to pass, as in the 1970s with strikes and demonstrations rife due to the pressure of change.

Referring to a book written by Alvin Toffler in 1970 called ‘Future Shock’, about the ‘premature arrival of the future’, Anne discusses the unsettled nature of current society and how too much unfettered change via technology and world events can sew confusion, conflict and fear amongst us.

BEST MOMENTS

‘The security was under attack by all the change in all its various forms that were affecting daily life creating conflict with the environment, the film referred to choice and over-choice, and the pressure to keep up with the change ; “Don’t fall behind.”’

’Spending less time at home, more time out of the home either in the place of work or commuting to the place of work. This is all part of ‘Future Shock’, the pressure. Its adapting, being forced to adapt is disquieting because humans are social animals.’

‘I wonder if this was when the word stress first came to the fore. Apparently a Soviet doctor in 1969 had predicted that they would soon have the ability to create geniuses.’

ABOUT THE HOST

Anne originally trained as a maths and science teacher but then chose to qualify as an accountant and worked in business for 12 years. Having recognised that there was more to life than a successful career – specifically working long hours to make money for other people at the expense of her own health – she quit the rat race and returned to her first love: teaching, but on a part-time basis. Fascinated by psychology, philosophy and theology, she is now a successful trainer, speaker and author, who enjoys sharing her passion, purpose and knowledge with a growing audience.
